Vanity Publishing. That’s what self-published authors were once called. It was vanity to publish your own stories rather than wait for a large lumbering traditional publisher to come scoop you up. For those authors who couldn’t fit through the eye of bestseller publishing, were left to fend for themselves and to build their own platforms.

That is exactly what bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout did. After being rejected by large publishers, Jennifer wrote 13 books, published through indie presses. Instead of waiting for a large publishing house to scoop her up, Jennifer did what she does best–she kept writing. A product of this was the bestselling Wait for You, originally published under J. Lynn. This book as well as two others were picked up by HarperCollins in a six figure deal. Armentrout agrees that this is a large amount for a “self-pub” author and instead of celebrating she is too busy writing.

The successful self-pub author is not a fluke. Self-pub authors work hard and participate in their success: they blog, maintain engaging social media, offer promos and attend events. These authors do this because they have no deep-pocketed marketing execs to fall back on. They utilize social media, get involved in networking and indeed create their own fan base.

It is an exciting thought that there are hundreds, no thousands of self-pub authors out there who work hard, sacrifice and write every spare moment and could have their books reach even larger audiences. No, not everyone needs a big 5 backer, the successful self-published author has proven they can do it themselves.

E.L. James is set to publish a new book, not a fictional spin off of the erotic “Fifty Shades of Grey” series but a guide to writing. “Fifty Shades of Grey: Inner Goddess (A Journal)”, to be published by Vintage Books, will detail James’ tips and tricks for writing.

There is no denial that this trilogy has sold massive numbers and created great profits (70 million books sold)–but they have been criticized as some of the worst written bestsellers. In Aug 2011, Tribune Express’ book reviewer, Norman Ansari wrote about the first novel in the series:

“’Fifty Shades of Grey’ is poorly written, and that too to a surprising degree. Twice, I stopped reading to check if I had been duped in my purchase or whether I was reading an authentic eBook,”

Criticism for E.L. James’ new writing guide seems to smack of bitter grapes–we all bought the Fifty Shades books, even after we heard how badly they were written, especially because of this. We might as well criticize the minimal collective attention span of our society or the fact that misery loves company–and maybe even a little slap and tickle too.

Whether you agree with this new E.L. James book or her “right” to write it, remember one thing–70 million books sold speaks to a whole bunch of readers–agreeable or not.
