Anne Kemp’s Top 5 essentials for your next Caribbean Vacation.
I learned a lot about myself when I lived in the Caribbean. For one, life on an island isn’t all about the beach. When packing your bag for your vacation — or new life — there are a few essentials you’ll need besides your bathing suit, a pair of flip-flops and some SPF.

- Patience – Being away on an island, one should be filled with feelings of peace and zen. Then something happens to your vehicle and you need your car fixed or you’re hungry and you just want a pizza delivered. Yes, Virginia, there is indeed such a thing as “Island Time,” when the locals are going to get whatever you need when they have time. Life in the Caribbean is not about instant gratification, so power down and learn to enjoy things as they unfold. It’s all about the adventure!
- eReader – This will come in handy during moments when your newfound patience is being tested. Load up before you leave, because sometimes the islands will have power outages and loss of internet is common, especially during hurricane season, so downloading could be a problem. Personally, I recommend making sure you have All Fruits Ripe on your Kindle, Nook or iPad, and get Rum Punch Regrets when it’s out on May 25th.
- A Good Liver – Being on the islands it’s just natural to imbibe in local rum and beer or enjoy many, many cocktails. For me, it was all about the Rum Punch on St. Kitts or the Killer Bee’s on Nevis – nothing in the world compares! If you’re heading that way and need to know which spots have the best of these, email me at annekemp@annekemp.com and I’ll be glad to point you in the right direction!
- Sense of Humor – If you’re on vacation or relocating, being on an island is nothing like living on the mainland, especially if you are in the Caribbean. Pack your sense of humor and remember that you can’t take yourself seriously down there, not when there are sunsets to be seen and bonfires to be lit. Say good-bye to Target and hello to “I hope someone can mail that to me.”
- Don’t forget your heart – San Francisco isn’t the only place to leave your heart anymore. Once on St. Kitts, you could fall in love with the life, the freedom, the people… or maybe you’ll just fall in love. It’s been known to happen and when it does, just go with it!

Hi Anne! This is great advice for what to bring along any and every day, too.
Looking forward to your book.
best,
Lynne
Thanks Lynne
And thank you for taking the time to stop by the blog and check it out!
Anne
Hi, Anne. I haven't as yet been to the Caribbean, but when I lived in Miami would often visit the Bahamas. Let's just say one pina colada too many and I have not been able to look at the drink since 1979. Ha ha. I love your advice on island living/vacationing. Now I want to go to St. Kitts, but maybe I'll read your books instead.
If you do decide to go, let me know – I can help you plan your trip! HAHA
I know what you mean about pina colada's – I had a bad fuzzy navel experience in high school Can't hear the word schnapps without cringing…
Thanks for stopping by!
Hi Anne,
Wonderful advice. Especially the one about your liver!
Thanks Janie
You live and you learn!
Anne
You had me at “bonfires to be lit”. I am a girl with a fire obsession – especially on the beach! Wahhh…I wanna go to St. Kitts….
P.S. Got All Fruits Ripe – looking forward to the read!
They have a big bonfire on the beach every Thursday in Frigate Bay right on the Caribbean side. It is sooo much fun! You'd love it!
Thanks for getting the novella – Can't wait to hear your feedback!
Anne
Hi Anne – Good liver made me smile! At first I thought you meant, good liver as in, willingness to enjoy life, but then I remembered your title and Rum Punch!!
HAHAHA!!!
I'm so glad you stopped by Charlene
We should make some rum punch one day, grab Robin and put our toes in some sand!
Ooooo, St. Kits, Island Time, Rum Punch, E Reader–all this sounds delicious and beyond compare. I want to 'power down' and lounge! Makes me long for an island vacation. I would even give up my Target addiction for a week or two of this lovely slower beat.
Maggie – I always joke that two weeks is the about the time when it hits you that you're “not in Kansas anymore”
I wish everyone could check out of life for a month or more to an island!
Thanks for stopping by!
Anne,
You have me itching to take an island vacation now. Great tips, I'll have to remember! Congrats on the release(s)!!
Thank you Dee J.! And let me know if you ever need any help planning – I miss St. Kitts so much and think everyone should visit that island. It's gorgeous!
Thanks for stopping by!
Okay and now I want to run away even more to the Islands although Island time sounds very, very scary.
It's funny when you deal with island time – it's everyday to them while for us Americans it's like “Whhhaaaatttt? I have to wait for that???” hahaha
Thanks for stopping by Maria
Hi Anne! I'm totally down for drinks and toes in the sand! When do we leave? I could live on tropical drinks. Love your travel essentials! I've never been to the Caribbean and would love to visit there sometime. Next time you go, you should hide me in your suitcase. I could be essential, too.
lol
BTW – your covers rock and so did your novella! Can't wait for Rum Punch Regrets!
You are the bestest in the world, do you know that?!?! XOXOX
Makes me want to go hop a plane right now – as long as I've packed everything you suggested! Fun post indeed.
Thank you Veronica! Let me know if you need a partner-in-crime
Anne
I never forget to take my heart on holiday – the problem for me is leaving it on vacation!
Love the title Rum Punch Regrets – visceral!
I spent two months in Turks and Caicos… greatest eight weeks of my life.
